Summary
IP PReVENT includes a great number of research actions aiming at providing an increased safety for all road users. For a vast majority of the systems under development, perception of the environment of the vehicle in the broad sense plays a major role in the efficiency of the concept. Perception clearly cannot rely entirely on a single sensor or technology, and should instead benefit from multiple sensors and technologies, as is the case in all relevant PReVENT Vertical Sub- Projects (VSPs), to be able to face degraded or adverse conditions.
In this context, multi-sensor fusion has been acknowledged as a major topic, to which the Horizontal Sub-Projects Profusion1 and ProFusion2 are entirely devoted. One of the fusion challenges is how to gain the best benefit of – possibly contradictory – information stemming from a number of heterogeneous sensors. Within ProFusion2, a number of perception issues are addressed by different innovative fusion approaches, which will be implemented based on several VSP demonstration vehicles.
