Technical Abstract
This document provides a technical description of the modules that will be considered in the design and development of the SASPENCE system.
SASPENCE (Safe Speed and Safe Distance) is a support system that assists the driver in avoiding accidents related to excessive speed and/or too short headway. It provides a seamless cooperation with the driver, suggesting him/her the most appropriate speed/distance according to the actual driving context, such as type of road, traffic, road segment and obstacle ahead.
Through this work, the Safe Speed and Safe Distance concept is thoroughly analysed in order to point out the specifications that should be taken into account in the system development. These specifications, together with the requirements already defined and the ongoing architectural tasks, offer an overall system definition and reveal how SASPENCE should operate.
A list of SASPENCE main SW modules and a preliminary list of main components are obtained as a result of the functional requirements above all, as well as on the basis of study of users’ needs and expectations on the system for different situations of use. Such activities will be the starting-point of the system architecture definition (both at general SASPENCE system and at particular prototype level). System specifications (with functional requirements, safety criteria statements and architecture) are an essential part in defining the scope of the project work, in order to state the system main functionalities and components (by SW and HW architecture point of view) as well as to prepare the impact assessment of SASPENCE system on traffic safety.
