Executive summary
In the INTERSAFE project, two demonstrator vehicles from BMW and VW were built up with prototype driver assistance systems addressing the improvement of traffic safety at intersections. The VW demonstrator covered both intersection assistant (left turn and lateral traffic) and traffic light assistant while the BMW demonstrator
focused only on the traffic light assistance task. These systems were implemented in a VW Phaeton and a BMW 5 series.
According to the scenarios selected for study, the systems included two assistance functions:
- Traffic Light Assistant (TLA): this warned the driver to avoid the red light violation.
- Intersection Assistant (IA): this warned the driver to avoid a potential collision with other road users at the intersection.
This document describes the tests done within the INTERSAFE project. These tests were unique in the sense that they represented the first large-scale tests on intersection assistant systems.
