Technical Abstract
In this work package WP51.600, feasibility of a radio transponder based detection and localisation of VRUs (vulnerable road users, i.e. pedestrians and cyclists) in urban environments is investigated. With respect to an improved protection, of particular importance are situations, where there is no line of sight between vehicle driver and VRU. In contrast to other sensor systems, e.g. radar, or video a radio frequency based localisation system is a promising candidate for the detection of optical hidden traffic participants. The system uses active transponders the VRUs are equipped with and a sensing smart antenna device in the vehicles. The smart antenna device should estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) by appropriate algorithms and calculate the locations sub sequent
