The vision of PReVENT is to create electronic safety zones around vehicles by developing and demonstrating a set of complementary safety functions that help drivers to avoid or mitigate an accident by means of in-vehicle systems which sense the nature and significance of the danger. Depending on the nature of the threat, the active and preventive safety systems will inform, warn, actively assist the driver, intervene in order to avoid an accident or ultimately, mitigate its consequences. This paper describes functional requirements for preventive and active safety applications and presents the overall system architecture derived from them.
