Impacts
Solving societal problems - Traffic safety & Congestion
Although European road traffic has been steadily increasing, the number of fatal accidents has been reduced by 50% during the last decades. This positive effect can mostly be attributed to automotive passive safety devices such as airbags, improved braking systems as well as improved vehicle body structures.
Accident analysis and statistics indicate a death toll of 40,000 per year in the pre-accession 15 EU Member States and a societal cost of €2 billion per year. As preventive safety applications can prevent accidents and mitigate the consequences, the earliest introduction of these technologies is a high priority. A significant reduction in European road injuries and fatalities can only be achieved by a widespread deployment of affordable active and passive safety technologies in the vehicles.
Reinforcing European competitiveness
Europe leads the world in the development of intelligent integrated road safety systems and their relevant technologies. PReVENT will enable the European industry to further and maintain strengthen this position by introducing leading edge technologies required for their realisation while helping to reduce road accidents.
Contributions to Policy Developments & Cooperation
By nature, PReVENT systems are not bound to national borders but are inter-operable throughout Europe, and even the world. They open up possibilities for improved mobility on a European scale, which generally supports European economic development. The safety impacts from the PReVENT results will be propelled smoothly through integration and co-operation, by common understanding of functions, application definitions, functional architecture, roadmaps, and common priorities. The project work in PReVENT enables a tremendous exchange of information, co-operation and dissemination between the whole European automotive industry, thus leading to successful utilisation of the results at European level.
