3D Test Camera ready for experimental tests
The PReVENT subproject UseRCams focuses on the development of an affordable active 3D sensor, vital in providing improved obstacle detection and classification at short range.
The sensor is especially suitable for collission mitigation, protection of vulnerable road users and blind spot detection. During the last months, the UseRCams consortium has developed a first prototype based on a nanosecond-pulsed laser and a customised CMOS photosensitive sensor with short integration time. The UseRCams consortium held a workshop in Lindau, Germany on November 24.
The workshop presented the measurement principle, the chip development and the design of the UseRCams active 3D range Test System devoted to short distance around vehicle surveillance and aiming on unprecedented reliability and robustness of technical perception in comparison to state of the art technology.
With respect to the specified functional requirements the results of experimental car evaluation were demonstrated, concerning:
- Near to intermediate front and side distance range of cars (20m-25m)
- Lateral proximity of trucks (blind spot surveillance)
- 3D-algorithms for object (obstacles, pedestrian) detection and classification independently of surface reflectivity and ambient illumination conditions
The main scope of the workshop was the demonstration on live of the 3D camera . Many scenarios have been presented, with different type of obstacles (tree, pedestrians, etc...)
The participants showed a large interest in the potential use of the 3D camera and several additional applications were discussed. Next generation sensors are expected in Spring 2006
The next steps in the development of the 3D camerea are the customisation of 3D-CMOS Array Chip 64x8 and evaluation and the 3D camera will be implemented into different test vehicles :
1 BMW car (with CRF) for pedestrian and rear-end accidents 1 Renault car for Side crash perception 1 Volvo truck for Blind Area surveillance
