PReVENT at IEEE IV 2005 in Las Vegas
In addition to a number of PReVENT related talks, PReVENT had also got a dedicated session at the renowned IEEE "Intelligent Vehicles" Conference, which took place this time from June 06 till 08, 2005 in Las Vegas.
Despite this session being quite late in the evening more than 50 people came to listen to persentations by the PReVENT Project Officer at the EU, Fabrizio Minarini, who set in his talk the PReVENT scene on EU level, by the IP coordinator, Matthias Schulze, who gave a general overview on PReVENT, and by Su-Birm Park and Kai Fürstenberg, the leaders of the sub-projects PROFUSION 2 and INTERSAFE, who presented their subprojects. The presentations were well received by the audience and the four presenters had to answer quite a lot of questions afterwards.
The conference in general was very interesting and gave a good opportunity to talk to the main players in the field of "Intelligent Vehicles" in the world in very relaxed atmosphere. What could be observed was a trend towards inter-vehicle communication and co-operative systems with a number of talks on that issue. This is quite noteworthy because in the past the conference focussed on autonomous systems mostly. Particular highlights of this year´s IEEE IV were the banquet speach of Ron Kurjanowicz, Programm Manger with DARPA, who presented the DARPA Grand Challenge 2005, for which he is responsible and the key note speaches by Prof. Max Donath of University of Minnesota and Prof. Mohan M. Trivedi of University of California at San Diego on "Designing of Human centered Systems for Crash Avoidance" and on "Computer Vision for Safer Driving".
All in all it was worth going to Las Vegas, not only to promote IP PReVENT in the U.S. but also get a good impression of where PReVENT stands in comparison to other activities in the field of ITS and Intelligent Vehicles. Next year´s IV will take place in Tokyo and participation is highly recommended.
