PReVENT reaches university students
Recently, Prof. Roberto Lot asked the PReVENT consortium to give a lecture presenting its activities and go deeper in details in one of the function fields. The targeted audience was his last year Mechanical Engineering students at University of Padova. Eventhough, the role of PReVENT is not directly to train and teach, Dr. Fabio Tango from CRF accepted the offer and gave a lecture about PReVENT (with emphasis on SASPENCE) in November 2005. The title was “Driver and environment models for advanced driver’s assistance systems”.
The main focus was on the importance of the sensor environment reconstruction and the different data-fusion techniques; followed by the implication by the driver’s viewpoint was considered with its related vehicle interactions: in this context, the link with the other EC-Funded IP AIDE has been illustrated. Dr. Tango illustrated this aspect with specific examples merging the two complementary topics of a complete assessment of surrounding scenarios and of an advanced HMI for ADAS application considering the case of SASPENCE.
Finally, the INSAFES subproject was illustrated in order to illustrate the integration approach of PReVENT, pointing out the main features of this applications and how the different functions will be merged.
The lecture attracted the interest of the last year students with a long "Question and Answer" session which continued overtime.
This small lecture illustrates the importance to keep promoting ADAS systems in the university engineering programs. The ADAS awareness within engineering students seems to be picking up merging mechanical, electronical and signal processing departments but the segmentation of engineering studies educating more and more specialised engineers is an issue for ADAS research. ADAS technologies are indeed multi-disciplinary and thus they require expertise in many different aspects of engineering which is not present in the more and more specialised fresh engineers.
