Tests of the SASPENCE system in VEHIL laboratory
The SASPENCE system is designed to aid the driver in avoiding accidents related to excessive speed and/or too small headway. One of the two SASPENCE demonstrator vehicles has been tested in the VEHIL laboratory of TNO in Helmond (The Netherlands).
The TNO VEHIL has been designed to test advanced driver assistance systems in a controlled environment. In this laboratory the vehicle under test is running on a chassis dyno, and obstacles are represented by robot vehicles (see pictures). In this way, it is possible to reproduce driving situations in a controlled and reproducible manner, and also to create traffic situations that would be dangerous to test on a public road or test track, e.g. for pre-crash situations.

In the VEHIL laboratory, the SASPENCE vehicle has been tested in a number of situations like following and approaching a vehicle in front, sudden braking of the preceding vehicle, and cut-in manoeuvres. The analysis of the recorded data on the behaviour of the system will give an accurate analysis of the response of the driver assistance system. The results will be used for further improvement of the functionalities and for evaluation of the safety impact of the system.
