Safe Speed Safe Speed and Safe Following functions help drivers keep or choose a speed or inter-vehicle distance allowing them to safely cope with the road situation they will meet in the following seconds. The approach is mostly autonomous.
Lateral Support and driver monitoring deals with autonomous applications focusing on the lateral areas of a vehicle to help drivers keep their vehicles at the safest position in the lane, as well as warn them if they are about to run off the road. The driver monitoring field is combined with lateral support as the lateral behaviour of the driver gives important information on the driver distraction or concentration.
This function field covers the investigation of autonomous and cooperative approaches to safety applications dedicated at approaching or passing intersections.
Vulnerable Road Users and Collision Mitigation
Collision mitigation and pre-crash protection systems focus on reduction of injuries and fatalities in case of unavoidable crashes (in particular on the last 2-3 seconds before the impact). Collision mitigation by braking significantly reduces the kinetic energy of impact, thereby greatly reducing crash severity. Pre-crash road user protection systems based on structural measures (such as adaptable crash boxes) can be effectively applied to extend the crumple zone of vehicles. Structural design could significantly reduce intrusion of mechanical components into the passenger compartment during a crash.
Statistical data show that within Europe, nearly one third of all injuries and fatalities happened while driving at dawn or night. Night driving support functions address the reduced perception at night, especially from elderly people, by dedicated sub-functions for night driving support covering appropriate assistance in lateral and longitudinal directions, taking in account reduced perception of road borders, dangerous curves or intersections and any obstacles, animals or vulnerable road users ahead.
