D40.74b - Evaluation Results of the Intersection Safety System on the Simulator
INTERSAFE
Confidential document
Executive summary
In the project INTERSAFE advanced driver assistance systems, which are designed to improve traffic safety in intersection areas, were developed with and implemented in a dynamic driving simulator. According to the most relevant scenarios, the following major functions were realised:
- Traffic Light Assistant (TLA): It warns the driver to avoid red light violation and gives speed recommendations.
- Intersection Assistants (IAs): It warns the driver to avoid collisions with other road users (oncoming or crossing traffic).
In order to test the system’s functionality and the user acceptance, tests were carried out in following two phases:
- System test → test the system’s function on application level
- User test → test the system’s function on HMI level
These tests proved the functionality of the INTERSAFE systems. They are able to fulfil the tasks of assisting the driver in order to avoid potential traffic accidents at intersection.
User test focused mainly on the user acceptance of the system and its HMI design. 47 subjects of different age, gender and driving experience were selected to take part in these tests. After driving within the simulator and experiencing the INTERSAFE systems, they were asked to evaluate whether the system is helpful and reliable. They mostly stated that it could help in daily driving and could improve the overall traffic safety.
