The major task of the project INTERSAFE, which is funded by the European Commission, is to reduce the number of accidents in intersection scenarios. In order to solve this problem, the BMW Group chose a top-down approach to develop advanced safety systems for intersections. The relevant scenarios of turning, crossing and ignoring traffic lights were identified by the analysis of intersection accidents. Based on this, the controller will be developed within the realistic environment of the BMW Group dynamic driving simulator. This allows determining the requirements for the surveillance systems in parallel to the development of the other components such as the Human-Machine-Interface and the controller algorithm. Furthermore, the virtual environment allows the evaluation process to occur with real test drivers in critical situations without endangering them. The results of the project will be an assistance system to enhance safety at intersections.
